Some light dampstaining is visible at the corners of the front flaps of the jacket, & there is some dampstaining & offset on its reverse. Small light mark at bottom of rear board. There is a tiny fingernail nick in the outer margin of the first plate in the book, & a dark mark in the upper margin of plates section, which does not intrude upon the illustrations. The text pages are in very good condition, with a small slightly abraded patch in the upper margin of p.52, where a lightly adhesive marker appears to have become stuck to the paper a little too hard before removal. Overall, this remains a sturdy, good looking copy. | £40

Dent | 1954 – 1958 | Temple Classics pocket editions in unclipped jackets, published respectively in 1954, 1956 & 1958. All jackets have undergone some sunning, & there are some short closed tears & loss to their edges, most evidently at the foot of the spine of the Inferno. Curiously, the spines are not consistently aligned: the lettering on the Inferno & Paradiso is from bottom to top, whereas that on the Purgatorio runs from top to bottom. There is an ownership signature on the ffep of the Inferno. Still a handsome set. | £50

Tissue guard is quite fragile & partly detached. Opening pages are foxed. Machen’s name has been written on the ffep: this is not a signature. Despite the faults noted above, this remains a handsome copy, pleasant to read & handle. | £200

Leonora Carrington; Andrea Schlieker (ed.) | Leonora Carrington: Paintings, drawings and sculptures 1940-1990 | Serpentine Gallery | 1991 | A serviceable copy, which has been water-damaged at its upper corner. The main area of the coloured prints is undamaged, although there is some staining in the margins of a couple of pages. The text pages are all readable although there is, again, some marginal staining which obtrudes onto the outer edge of the text on a couple of pages. The top outer corner of the front panel is rather crinkled, & there is a waterstain about an eighth of the way down the fore-edge. The ffep has adhered to the reverse of the front cover. The book is rather cocked, with the front cover set forward. A magazine article on Leonora Carrington has been loosely inserted. I am offering this book as a reading copy only, with faults as noted. | £30
