In addition to publishing, we dealt secondhand books in Greenwich and Crystal Palace during the 1990s, and moved our business to Brighton in 1999. We have been trading from Snoopers Paradise at 7/8 Kensington Gardens for over twenty years. Our original stall was located by the turnstile entrance of this vast indoor market in the North Laine, and we relocated to a larger and more prominent space just behind the cash desk at the main entrance in 2017. We currently stock about 2000 books there, along with a selection of collectable tarot decks and the occasional spoken word CD.

Although we have shop premises, our online stock is stored separately in our warehouse & handled with all reasonable precautions. We are quarantining all new acquisitions for a minimum of three days before cataloguing and shelving them. Local customers are welcome to collect pre-ordered books from our locked display cabinet in Snoopers Paradise.

Philip Thompson & Peter Davenport | The Dictionary of Visual Language | Bergstrom & Boyle | 1980 | 0903767074 The book gives every impression of being a regular first edition, with publisher’s price on the front flap, & the expected information on the title page & publishing information page BUT the front flap is secured by a sticker reading “This W.H. Smith/Doubleday book club edition was slightly damaged in transit and is now being sold at a special bargain price”. A large “D” has been marked on the rear pastedown. The only actual damage which I have detected is that the boards are rather bumped, which I would have put down to general wear & tear over the last forty years, but which would have been more of an issue when the book was new. Apart from that, the edges of the page block are now foxed, & a previous owner has written their name on both the ffep & title page. To avoid any confusion, this is the original UK edition of “The Dictionary of Graphic Images”, which I also have in stock. | £50.00

Friedrich Nietzsche; Alexander Tille [ed.]; William A. Hausemann [tr.]; John Gray [tr.]. | The Works of Friedrich Nietzsche: Vol. X A Genealogy of Morals; Poems | Macmillan | 1897 | First edition. Minor wear to cover, most evident at extremities of spine; top corners a little bumped. 1939 ownership signature on ffep. Foxing on prelims, final pages, & outer edge of pageblock. Intermittent foxing elsewhere in the book. A couple of smallish dark marks, possibly just offset ink, in the upper margin of p.xix. All pages have been cut, rather clumsily in the case of the top edge of a couple of signatures: this does not intrude anywhere near the main area of the page. Despite these faults, this is a solid copy with crisp type on heavy paper, & remains pleasing to read & handle. | £300.00

Lyn Hejinian | The Cold of Poetry | Sun & Moon | 1984 | 9781557130631 Background of spine faded; lettering remains fully legible. | £20.00

Ludwig Wittgenstein; B. F. McGuinness [ed., tr.]; T. Nyberg [ed.]; G. H. von Wright [ed., intr.]; D. F. Pears [tr.] | Prototractatus | Routledge & Kegan Paul | 1971 | 0710067887 First edition. Ink note in the outer margin of p.55, a couple of very small ink marks at the edge of the following page. | £50.00

Julian Trevelyan | The Artist and his World | Gollancz | 1960 | At first glance, a handsome copy in a bright jacket. But closer inspection reveals signs of library ownership: a reference number & faint traces of a removed label on the spine of the jacket; a reference number on the spine of the book cover; & the faint imprint of a carefully removed label on the front pastedown. The book does not show any significant signs of use. Its paper is foxed & darkened with age. | £20.00

Wolfgang Koeppen; Mervyn Savill [tr.] | Death in Rome | Weidenfeld & Nicolson | 1956 | First UK publication in unclipped jacket with price crossed through. Jacket design by Eduardo Paolozzi. | £30.00

Katherine Dunn | Geek Love | Hamish Hamilton | 1989 | 0241126274 UK first edition in unclipped jacket. Spine of jacket is slightly faded. | £100.00

Lawrence Durrell | The Alexandria Quartet: Justine, Balthazar, Mountolive, Clea | Faber | 1969 | 0571052045 1969 printing of the collected edition. The publishing information page states “First published in this edition 1969”, but I believe the novels were first collected in 1962, the date of the collection’s copyright & Durrell’s preface. Whatever, this is a very handsome copy in an unclipped jacket, with a very little foxing to the outer edge of the page block, minimal dustmarking to the lower edge, & some erased initials (or maybe a stock code) at the upper corner of the ffep. | £75.00

Alain Robbe-Grillet | Snapshots and Towards a New Novel | John Calder | 1965 | First British edition. Very good hardback, a little faded at extremities of spine & with an ownership signature on ffep, in good jacket. Jacket is unclipped, but has suffered some loss at the edges & is worn, with a little loss, along the creases of the spine: its predominantly white background areas are rather rubbed & marked. | £100.00

Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle | The Compleet Molesworth | Max Parrish | 1961 | Fourth impression, no jacket. Boards are rather worn & marked, & there is a light damp-stain in the gutter of the front endpapers & half tile page. The outer edge of the page block is similarly foxed & marked. Despite these faults, this remains a nice sturdy copy of this dethless classic, which is pleasant to handle & read. | £30.00

Ivor Cutler | Gruts | Museum Press | 1962 | First Edition. Front cover set very slightly forward, edge of pageblock foxed. Jacket is unclipped, with traces of having once been crinkled about half way down the spine. There are odd vestigial traces of tape along the top & bottom of the jacket, I suppose from some kind of protective cover having been applied to it at some time. | £100.00

Stanley Middleton | A Man Made of Smoke | Hutchinson | 1973 | 0091150612 Midway edition, bound in card with a dustjacket. The jacket is unclipped, but is in rather fragile condition at the very top of the spine, where it has been discreetly backed with tape. There is some offset from the flaps on the first & last pages of the book. The book is slant, with the front cover set forward. | £15.00

Francine Bernier | The Templars’ Legacy in Montreal, the New Jerusalem | Adventures Unlimited | 2001 | 1931882142 Light wear to cover & edge, edge of cover very slightly sunned. | £25.00

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh AKA Osho | Sat Chit Anand: Truth Consciousness Bliss | Rebel Publishing House | n.d. | 3893380426 Jacket worn at top of spine. Paper darkening with age, with large unsightly blotches on top edge. Otherwise in very good condition. | £35.00

Finis Jennings Dake | Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible | Dake Bible Sales | 1978 | Bound in brown leatherette, in presentation box: previous owner’s name & address are written inside the lid of the box. Both the box & the cover of the Bible have a couple of little bumps on one edge, as a result of careless storage or handling at some time: otherwise, I would assess this as in very good condition. NB: for those not familiar with this edition, it presents a dense array of text in four columns a page in fine print – it’s rich in content but not that easy on the eye. | £30.00

Peter F. Anson | The Pilgrim’s Sketch Books – No. 2: Forgotten Shrines of Britain & No. 3: A Pilgrimage to Brittany | Burns, Oates and Washbourne | Slim booklets with card covers. A little sunned around the spine. The pale unlaminated covers have picked up a few small marks. | £30.00 each

There is some loss, & discreet tape reinforcement on the reverse of the cover, at the lower edge of the back cover near the spine. The spine is lightly damp-marked, as are the edges of the prelims. There is an old price inked on the ffep, along with the stamps & reference number of the Pearl Assurance Library, which are repeated on the title page. There are tape traces on the outer edge of the front flap & on the endpapers. The book is slant, with the front cover set forward. | £50.00

Robert Martin | A Key to the Morgue | Robert Hale | 1960 | Unclipped bright jacket. W. H. Smith Library label on front pastedown, but the book does not appear to have had significant use: it appears to be in very good condition apart from some blotchy foxing to the outer edge of the page block. April 2021

Lois Phillips | Lieder Line by Line | Duckworth | 1979 | 0715609734 Hardback in clipped jacket, lower edge of boards rubbed. Previous owner’s name & a note on the ffep, indicating that the book was bought specifically for a performance of “Winterreise” – the text of “Winterreise” has indeed been carefully marked up, with one ink correction to the German text, & numerous pencil alterations to the English text on the facing pages. I would describe this intervention as interesting rather than irritating, but would downgrade the book from “very good” to “good” because of it. | £40.00

Hugh MacDiarmid | Second Hymn to Lenin and Other Poems | Stanley Nott | 1935 | First edition, no jacket. Yellow cloth cover is a little worn & marked. 1935 ownership signature on ffep. A few page numbers noted in pencil on rear pastedown. | £50.00
