Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki, Jo Gill, Anthony Clark: Servants of the Light Tarot. Aquarian. Clamshell case containing 128 page paperback book, tarot deck, & two extra cards advertising other decks available from the publisher. The plastic case is worn on the outside, & the moulded compartment that houses the cards inside the case is cracked. The cards themselves still look very good indeed, but a few of them have picked up marks from use – at least 4 of them have very light tea stains on their white borders & there is a small red candlewax mark on another, & several of the white backs of the cards are marked. My feeling is that these traces of the cards having been used in consultations add to their presence, but please bear in mind that this is very evidently a secondhand deck. In contrast to the cards, which still look fresh despite the faults noted above, the book has obviously been very heavily used, & is worn & creased, with marks inside the back cover. The pages illustrating spreads are particularly worn & marked, where the book has evidently been laid open on a table. £100.00

Peter Beagle, Ted Berrigan, John Cage, etc.: Guabi, issue no. 1. 1969.Large format (approx. 8.5 x 9 inch) magazine, published from Merrill College, University of California. This quite bulky publication is bound by two staples: the upper staple has started to come away from the card cover, & the predominantly white back cover is marked at the top corner. £30.00

S Calle EP sc

Sophie Calle: Exquisite Pain. Thames & Hudson, 2004.
Good. No dj as issued. Grey cloth boards have grubby patch on back where original isbn/price sticker has been removed and the last word of the red lettering on back has lifted slightly. Jean Cocteau: The White Paper / Pierre Angelique: The Naked Beast at Heaven’s Gate with a preface by Georges Bataille. Greenleaf 1968. Rather wonderful publication, issued for “adult reading” – minor general wear to cover, lightly scuffed spine, edges of cover rather worn, paper darkened with age, but still a handsome copy. £100.00

William Gaddis: JR. Jonathan Cape, 1976. UK first in dustjacket. Good/good. Red boards reasonably fresh but front board is set slightly forward. Corners bumped, top corner of back board sl creased. Sl wear to top edge, especially at spine. Pastedown to fep lightly crinkled. Page edges foxed, a few marks and one slight indentation in lower edge of page block. Light foxing line along fep where dj flap made contact, Text pages clean and unmarked. Dustjacket is intact, not price-clipped, slightly worn along top and lower edges, foldover to front flap is rather rubbed and lamination along this line is peeling slightly. Still looks very nice. £160.00

Geoffrey Hill: Mercian Hymns. Deutsch 1971. A rather worn copy of the 1st paperback printing, which was evidently in the possession of Judith Kazantzis at some time, as rough drafts of her poem “Christ of Kenwood” are written out on two blank pages at the back of the book. All things considered, Hill’s great work is best experienced in the format in which it was originally published, & the association is an interesting one. £50.00

Roger Ingpen: A Choice of the Best English Lyrics. Three volume set in slipcase: 17th Century & Earlier; 18th Century; 19th Century. Selwyn & Blount, 1922. Three attractive pocket editions in slipcase. The books are in very good condition, apart from the following faults: their outer edges are quite heavily foxed, & their integral cloth bookmarks are rather worn, especially at the ends. The box is still in solid condition, but is discoloured & stained. £50.00

Shirley Jackson: The Lottery. Farrar, Straus 1949. Second printing in jacket, issued in April 1949, the month after its original publication. Some loss to edges & corners of jacket, closed tear at top edge of front cover, tape mend at top edge of back cover: despite these faults, the jacket still looks striking. Front cover of book is set a little forward, & the cloth cover is worn at the lower corners & towards the bottom of the spine. Internally, the book is in very nice condition indeed. £40.00

Richard Kempton: Provo. Autonomedia 2007. Minor wear to cover & edge, one page corner folded over. £60.00

Walter Savage Landor: Imaginary Conversations, ed. C. G. Crump. 6 volume set, Dent 1891. Some wear to covers, most evident on front cover of vol 1 & at extremities of spines; bump on lower edge of back cover of vol 3; endpapers heavily foxed; green cloth binding of vol 6 is a shade darker than the other volumes, matching that of the 2 volumes of poems listed below. £60.00

Walter Savage Landor: Poems, Dialogues in Verse and Epigrams, ed. C. G. Crump. 2 volume set, Dent 1892. Handsome set with various owners’ bookplates & signatures, some wear to extremities of spines. £20.00

John Lennon: In His Own Write. Jonathan Cape 1964. This is the first printing of Lennon’s first book, not to be confused with later impressions. Overall, it is a handsome copy, but it does show its age in a few respects. The front cover slants a little forward, the corners of the spine look worn, as do the creases to either side of the spine. There is a contemporary owner’s signature on the front endpaper. £40.00

Thomas Ligotti: Noctuary. Carroll & Graf 1994. Paperbound advance reading copy – top corner of front cover is lightly creased, lower edge of spine bumped, no problem with text pages. £40.00

[Paul Marteau:] Ancient Tarot of Marseilles. Grimaud, nd. 78 cards & booklet, no box. Booklet is well worn, with pen notes on the back cover, trumps are worn & scuffed, their outer edges darkened by shuffling; courts & pips appear unused. Cards have a lingering scent of perfume. Characteristics of this deck: undated Grimaud copyright on all trumps except the Tower, Moon & Sun; undated Grimaud copyright on all court cards; no copyright on the pips. Titles in French only. The cards have a white background; there are two yellow dice on the Magician’s table; no tax stamp on the Ace of Coins; 1748 / B. P. GRIMAUD / 1930 is printed on the 2 of Coins; a tulip is shown in the centre of the 4 of Coins. Cards are approx. 12.5 x 6.5 cm: total thickness of deck is approx. 4 cm. Booklet is in English, with Grimaud printed on the front cover, John Waddington on the back. To the best of my knowledge, Grimaud published cards matching this description between 1940 & 1963: the English language booklet suggests that this deck was issued for export somewhen after the repeal of the Witchcraft Act in 1951. £50.00

Iain Sinclair [editor]: Conductors of Chaos. Picador 1996. Desperately hard to obtain anthology, edited & introduced by Sinclair, with a stellar list of contributors, including J. H. Prynne, Allen Fisher, Bill Griffiths, Lee Harwood, Stewart Home, Grace Lake [aka Anna Mendelssohn], Barry MacSweeney, Maggie O’Sullivan & Denise Riley. It includes retrospective selections of work by David Jones, W. S. Graham & others. This book shows signs of wear & the passage of time: there are pressure marks on the cover, the edge is rather worn, & the paper inevitably tanned with age. On the plus side, the binding remains solid & the pages are unmarked. £50.00
