Secondhand

In addition to publishing, we dealt secondhand books in Greenwich and Crystal Palace during the 1990s, and moved our business to Brighton in 1999. We have been trading from Snoopers Paradise at 7/8 Kensington Gardens for over twenty years. Our original stall was located by the turnstile entrance of this vast indoor market in the North Laine, and we relocated to a larger and more prominent space just behind the cash desk at the main entrance in 2017. We currently stock about 2000 books there, along with a selection of collectable tarot decks and the occasional spoken word CD.

Although we have shop premises, our online stock is stored separately in our warehouse & handled with all reasonable precautions. We are quarantining all new acquisitions for a minimum of three days before cataloguing and shelving them. Local customers are welcome to collect pre-ordered books from our locked display cabinet in Snoopers Paradise.

Previous owner’s name & a note on the ffep, indicating that the book was bought specifically for a performance of “Winterreise” – the text of “Winterreise” has indeed been carefully marked up, with one ink correction to the German text, & numerous pencil alterations to the English text on the facing pages. I would describe this intervention as interesting rather than irritating, but would downgrade the book from “very good” to “good” because of it. | £40.00

Alexander Baron | From the City, from the Plough | Jonathan Cape | 1948 | Fourth impression in year of first publication. At first glance, a good to very good copy, lacking its dustjacket. Joan Henry | Yield to the Night | Panther | 1965 | Paperback with striking cover, which still looks impressive despite some general wear, most evident at the edges of the spine. The spine is creased, & there is a short split at the top of the join of the spine/front cover. There is a small portion of paper missing from the outer margin of p.19, which does not intrude upon the printed area of the page – I can’t tell whether this is a production fault or fingernail damage. | £35.00

Frank Herbert | Dune | Chilton | No jacket, red boards. Only publication date given is 1965, but this is sadly not the first printing. Cover is a little worn & lightly bumped at front lower corner, outer edge of pageblock is dustmarked. | £50.00

A. de C. Williams | The Marlborough Struwwelpeter | The Times Office Marlborough | N.D. | Very worn copy. Boards & backstrip are damp marked, as are corresponding areas of pastedown & endpapers. Dust jacket is price clipped, lightly sunned on spine & edge. There are a couple of closed tears to the upper edge of the back cover of the jacket, & the top edge of the jacket has been inconspicuously reinforced with clear tape on its reverse side. There is a faint trace of a small label on the front endpaper. The outer edge of the page block, & the pages at its extremities, are foxed. NB. The colours of the jacket are considerably paler than they appear in my photo. | £100.00
